Why Does This Even Matter?

BY JEFFREY D BROWN

The premise is the title. Why does this even matter? It’s a very reasonable question and one that I’ve asked myself at least 117 times over the last 4 or 5 years (whichever comes first). And frankly, I believe that it’s also an important question that needs to be asked in many different situations in business. And I suppose that holds true for life in general as well.

I started developing digital media in the later nineties after a couple of decades in traditional publishing (books, magazines, etc.). In the earlier days of the Web, it was a lot easier to get noticed and engage with people, largely because there wasn’t a much to look at or engage with. With the onslaught of social media as well as the ability of nearly anyone to create a Web presence of some kind from around 2010 forward (in my view), it all changed pretty dramatically.

Today, it’s a sea of millions of digital properties of all kinds that is blinding if you look at it too long — and most people do — responding to trends now requires a control room akin to something you’d see at NASA. I’m exaggerating, but maybe not. And it’s not a stretch to say that it’s mind-boggling (based on the game of the same name).

So again, why then would we put together something like GUITARbusiness? By most standards today, it would seem a tad old school. Although, to its credit, it’s certainly beyond a page of hotlinks. And that’s pretty dating, isn’t it? In this case, however, I prefer to look at the underlying concept rather than the vehicle (not that the vehicle is unimportant). And that underlying concept I’m referring to is something I’ve talked and written about a lot. It’s called FOCUS.

We’re focusing on something different. We’re focusing differently. As we’ve done with the podcast (GBR), and other parts of the platform (see the Value Shot), our focus is on the many business aspects of the guitar universe and how we can create and deliver value to our audience and stakeholders. It’s a clear distinction in many ways. In others, it may be more nuanced. There may be cross-over similarities to other media ventures, but the bigger picture view of what we’re doing is what matters. And that is what our destination is all about.

We’re moving in the direction that matters. But as a few of you have heard me say many times before on GBR about the destination… We’re definitely keeping all the options open on how we’re gonna get there. And we will. Join us if you like.
